Car batteries are particularly vulnerable, with their chemical degradation rate approximately doubling for every 15°F increase in temperature. Engine bay temperatures can exceed 140°F, causing batteries that might last five years in milder climates to fail in two or three years in Nevada.
Tyres also suffer, as asphalt temperatures can reach 175°F or higher. This heat causes air inside tyres to expand, increasing pressure and potentially leading to blowouts. Over time, the rubber compound dries out, making tyres stiffer and less grippy.
Manufacturer maintenance schedules, often based on "normal" driving conditions, may not be adequate for the Las Vegas summer. Engine oil thins faster, and brake fluid can boil, leading to reduced braking effectiveness. Belts and hoses are also prone to cracking and blistering from heat and UV exposure.
The AC system is under intense pressure, being essential for safety in triple-digit temperatures while operating under stressful conditions. Monsoon season, from July to September, adds further complications with humidity spikes that can accelerate corrosion on electrical components and rubber seals.
Beyond mechanical issues, dashboards can crack and warp, and paint clear coat can break down due to extreme UV exposure. Heat-related failures can also complicate insurance claims if an insurer determines the issue was preventable through basic maintenance.
