New community mental health hub in Cumbria sees positive early feedback

Hope Haven in Whitehaven has seen over 3,000 people access support since its launch in March, with nearly half having no prior contact with NHS mental health services.

  • Admissions to inpatient mental health wards in the area fell by 24% between January and September compared with the same period last year

Hope Haven, a new community mental health hub in Whitehaven, has seen positive early feedback from users. The hub offers preventive, open-access care 24/7, meaning people do not need a diagnosis or referral to access its services.

The night Tamara first walked through the doors of Hope Haven, she was afraid. She had been in and out of therapy and counselling since she was 14, after being abused by an acquaintance as a child. After a lengthy legal process her abuser was sentenced, but the 'mental challenge' of dealing with what had happened to her was not over.

Hope Haven is part of a pilot scheme of six hubs across England, which are due to be evaluated later this year. The hubs build on the Trieste model of mental health care, a 24-hour holistic approach which started in 1980s Italy.

Why this matters: The hub's success could provide a solution to high rates of suicides in the area.

What this means for you: If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, Hope Haven offers a range of support services, including one-to-one and group sessions.
