Six charged with voter fraud in California

The US Department of Justice has charged six people with alleged voter fraud crimes in California, as part of the Trump administration's campaign against the state's election processes.

  • Six lawful permanent residents have been accused of unlawfully registering to vote and casting fraudulent ballots.
  • The defendants are facing a maximum of five years in prison if convicted.
  • Experts say voting by noncitizens is extremely rare, and when it does occur, it's usually due to confusion.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) in California has charged six more people with alleged voter fraud crimes, an escalation of the Trump administration's campaign against the state's election processes on the eve of the midterms.

Bill Essayli, the top federal prosecutor in Los Angeles and a close ally of the president, announced on Monday that his office was prosecuting six lawful permanent residents accused of unlawfully registering to vote and casting fraudulent ballots.

Why this matters: The charges have been criticized by Democrats as an attempt to sow doubt in the results of the election.

What this means for you: If you are a registered voter in California, be aware that the DoJ is pushing for the exclusion of potentially fraudulent ballots from the count.
