A new train service has commenced operations between Finland and Sweden, re-establishing a rail connection between the two countries after decades. The service, which began at 5am on Monday, runs along the Gulf of Bothnia coastline, connecting Finnish Oulu and Swedish Haaparanta.
The journey takes approximately one hour and 40 minutes. Finland's state-owned railway, VR, operates two daily services in both directions. Passengers previously had to cross the border by car or on foot.
The new train does not extend beyond Haaparanta into Sweden due to differences in track gauge. Passengers wishing to travel further into Sweden must transfer to Swedish Norrtåg trains at Haaparanta station. The lowest ticket price for a mid-October journey between Oulu and Haaparanta is €5.40 (£4.60).
