Tottenham Hotspur's first home Premier League match of the season ended in a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle, despite a pre-match focus on Spurs' new signings. Newcastle's Anthony Elanga and Yoanne Wissa struck in the second half to secure the victory.
Spurs had the better of the first half and created chances, but failed to convert them. Newcastle took the lead just after the hour mark when Nico González's long pass found Amar Dedic, who headed the ball to Elanga. The Sweden international then scored his second goal in two matches with a left-foot shot.
Newcastle extended their lead in the 72nd minute from a corner. Lewis Hall's deep delivery was headed by substitute Nick Woltemade into the path of Wissa, who scooped the ball over his head and past Antonin Kinsky.
Tottenham's starting XI included five summer recruits, with £116m Sandro Tonali and £60m Omar Marmoush among them. Newcastle also featured new additions, with £50m signing Nico González making his debut.
