Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has entered a treatment program following his acceptance of a one-month ban for a positive cocaine test. Kyrgios admitted to a "huge mistake" after failing a drugs test on 22 June at an ATP 250 tournament in Spain.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted Kyrgios's explanation that his cocaine use occurred socially outside of competition. This was consistent with the level of cocaine found in his sample, as confirmed by an independent scientific expert.
Under World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) rules, the standard suspension for this type of breach is three months. However, this can be reduced to one month if the individual commits to an ITIA-approved treatment program, which Kyrgios has done.
Kyrgios, who had been provisionally suspended since 4 August, forfeited 6570 euros won in Mallorca. He is now permitted to compete again from Friday.
