Christopher Nolan's latest film, 'The Odyssey', has reportedly outpaced his Oscar-winning epic 'Oppenheimer' at the box office, achieving a significant milestone in just 13 days. While 'Oppenheimer' took 595 days to reach $330 million (£246.6 million) worldwide, 'The Odyssey' is expected to surpass this figure within 13 days of its release, according to Forbes.
The film, an adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic poem, stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. It also features Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and other notable actors.
'The Odyssey' has been critically acclaimed, with NME awarding it a five-star review and suggesting that "cinema may have peaked" with the film. It also became the biggest live-action release of 2026 after earning $264 million (£196 million) worldwide during its opening weekend.
Despite its success, a classics professor has criticised the movie for lacking "psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth." Additionally, Elon Musk has reportedly criticised the film's casting and claimed his Grok AI tool will create a "historically accurate" version of the story before the end of 2026.
The film's release has also led to a reported 550 per cent increase in online searches for learning Greek and a 70 per cent rise in sales of Homer's original poem compared to last year.
