North Norfolk District Council is expected to increase the highest on-the-spot fines for littering to £500. The Liberal Democrat-run authority is also set to raise fines for fly-tipping, with the maximum penalty potentially rising from £300 to £1,000.
The decision follows incidents earlier this year where significant amounts of waste were left on beaches in areas such as Cromer and Wells. Tony Bates, who set up a litter-picking group in Cromer, said locals felt "embarrassed" by the rubbish left on the sand during a heatwave.
Callum Ringer, the council's cabinet member for waste services, stated that these "heftier fines will hopefully make people think twice before they commit any of these offences." The council's cabinet is expected to approve the new fine levels on Monday.
