An adult and juvenile roseate tern have been photographed migrating south from the UK. The images were captured by birder Damian Money at South Gare, Redcar.
The British Ornithological Trust states that roseate terns are among the rarest seabirds in the UK. Coquet Island, located off Amble in Northumberland, is their only known UK breeding ground.
During the most recent breeding season, a record 155 pairs of these rare seabirds nested on Coquet Island. This figure represents the highest number recorded in over 50 years. The terns typically arrive in the UK in April and depart for West Africa in September.
