Nurse struck off for stealing £750,000 from 99-year-old for personal use

A nurse has been removed from the nursing register after stealing £750,000 from a vulnerable 99-year-old woman, spending the money on cosmetic surgery, home improvements, and vehicles.

  • Rebecca Louise Burwood, a deputy manager at Bryn Yr Haul Care Home, exploited a resident between 2017 and 2023.
  • The stolen funds were used for building work, a car, a campervan, and cosmetic surgery, with Burwood also obtaining ownership of the woman's £400,000 home.
  • A Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing found Burwood's fitness to practise impaired by misconduct, leading to her being struck off.

Rebecca Louise Burwood, a nurse and former deputy manager at Bryn Yr Haul Care Home in Mold, Flintshire, has been struck off the nursing register for stealing £750,000 from a 99-year-old resident. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) found her fitness to practise was impaired due to misconduct.

Burwood exploited the vulnerable resident between 2017 and 2023, using the stolen money for personal gain. This included funding cosmetic surgery, home improvements, and purchasing a car and a campervan. She also obtained ownership of the woman's £400,000 home.

The NMC hearing was told Burwood had a longstanding relationship with the woman, who had no family and was dependent on Burwood for friendship. Burwood became the resident's lasting power of attorney and oversaw her care, withdrawing money from her bank account and accepting ownership of her house.

Evidence showed over £370,000 left the resident's account over five years, with £160,000 from large cash withdrawals. Bank staff raised concerns about spending and claimed Burwood was "almost blackmailing" the woman to lift restrictions on her account. The panel concluded there was a significant imbalance of power and that Burwood engaged in a "sustained, calculated course of conduct" for personal gain.

Why this matters: The NMC stated that public confidence in the nursing profession would be undermined if a finding of impairment was not made, highlighting the seriousness of the misconduct and its impact on trust.
