Opal Healthcare has issued refunds totalling approximately $190,000 to nearly 350 residents, according to AAP. This action follows a comprehensive review into the alleged misuse of new aged care standards.
The standards, which came into effect in November, were designed to give residents greater control over their choices regarding premium products. Guidelines stipulated that services previously offered for free should not be charged for, although these guidelines were not legally binding.
Reports emerged months after the standards' implementation, indicating that some aged care providers were incorrectly charging residents for basic amenities, including television and Wi-Fi services. In certain instances, services were reportedly removed if payment was not made.
The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission initiated an investigation after the aged care minister, Sam Rae, informed the regulator of claims against Opal Healthcare. Mr Rae had previously stated that the removal of services such as air conditioning and televisions was unacceptable.
