  • The UK stated that Iran's support for the Houthis continues to fuel instability in Yemen.

The United Kingdom has strongly condemned the Houthis' decision to resume conflict in Yemen and their ongoing attacks against Saudi Arabia. Ambassador Kate Foster, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, stated at a UN Security Council meeting on Yemen that the UK joined Bahrain in requesting the urgent meeting due to the serious escalation by the Houthis.

The UK called for an immediate cessation of Houthi attacks, which include targeting civilian and energy infrastructure. The statement reaffirmed Saudi Arabia and Yemen's right to defend their security and sovereignty, attributing full responsibility for the crisis to the Houthis.

The UK also highlighted that the Houthis' actions are deepening humanitarian suffering in Yemen, where over 22 million people require assistance. The continued detention of UN and NGO personnel by the Houthis is obstructing aid efforts. Furthermore, the UK reiterated that Iran's long-standing support for the Houthis continues to fuel instability in the region.

Why this matters: The renewed conflict and attacks threaten regional stability, international shipping, and global trade routes, while also exacerbating a severe humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
