Recent Office for National Statistics (ONS) survey data indicates that over one million people in the UK who have never smoked have taken up vaping. This figure represents a year-on-year increase.
Vaping was initially introduced as a method to help smokers quit cigarettes. While vaping nicotine is considered less harmful than cigarettes, the long-term health effects are not yet clear, according to the NHS.
The ONS report also suggests that approximately one in six individuals aged 25-34 in the UK may use e-cigarettes either daily or occasionally. Overall, about 5.4 million people aged 16 and over vape in Britain, while the number of smokers continues to decline.
The UK government is aiming to reduce smoking rates and decrease the appeal of vaping among children and young people. A recent government consultation on new measures regarding the marketing of vapes, including bright colours and sweet flavours, is expected to provide a response.
