Pakistan's Supreme Court has ordered that jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan be moved to hospital following complaints about his health. A three-judge panel directed that Mr Khan be taken to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within the next 48 hours for examination by physicians.

The court also ruled that Mr Khan would be permitted weekly meetings with family members and telephone calls with his sons. Mr Khan's lawyers have stated he is suffering from various health conditions, including poor eyesight, and has not had access to specialist medical care. The court order specified that an eye specialist would be involved in his hospital treatment.

Mr Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 on corruption charges, which he asserts are politically motivated. He and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were sentenced to 17 years late last year. The Pakistani government has not publicly commented on the court ruling.

Why this matters: Imran Khan remains a significant figure in Pakistani politics with a large number of supporters, despite his imprisonment.
