Paul Greengrass's latest film, "The Uprising," reportedly takes on the 1381 Peasants' Revolt, but with a distinctive twist. The movie, shot in Greengrass's signature docu-reportage style, is described as imagining the historical event as an origin myth for a character akin to Robin Hood.
The film features Andrew Garfield as a fictional ploughman, grieving the loss of his family to the plague, who instigates an insurrection. This uprising reportedly merges with other outbreaks of revolutionary rage, with smudgy-faced folk descending on the capital to demand concessions from King Richard II.
Cosmo Jarvis and Jamie Bell portray the historical figures Wat Tyler and John Ball, respectively, who led the insurrection against the poll tax. Tom Hollander plays Sir Robert Hales, the king's adviser, while Katherine Waterston appears as Joan of Kent, and Woody Norman as the young Richard II.
