Peterborough City Council has unanimously approved a motion to tackle the misuse of nitrous oxide. The plan involves a combination of public education and enhanced enforcement measures.
The decision follows concerns raised by community litter-picking groups in Peterborough, who have reported regularly finding discarded nitrous oxide canisters. Last week, Peterborough Litter Wombles collected 82 canisters in a single day.
Cambridgeshire Police stated they have disposed of 972 canisters over the past 12 months and have observed a rise in larger discarded canisters. Nitrous oxide, a colourless gas, was classified as a Class C drug in 2023.
Independent councillor Ishfaq Hussain, who put forward the motion, called for collaboration between the council, police, licensing teams, and community groups to launch an awareness campaign. This campaign would highlight the health risks and legal consequences associated with the possession and supply of the drug. The motion also requested council officers to engage with local retailers to promote responsible sales practices.
