Mozilla closed its popular read-it-later application, Pocket, in May 2025, eight years after acquiring it. The company stated that changes in web browsing habits influenced the decision.
The closure prompted a rise in demand for alternative apps that allow users to save online content for later reading. Users were given a deadline of October 8, 2025, to export their saved articles, lists, archives, favourites, notes, and highlights.
Several alternative services have seen increased adoption, including Matter, Instapaper, and Raindrop.io. Some of these apps, such as Instapaper and Readwise Reader, facilitated imports for former Pocket users.
Newer apps like Matter and Recall also incorporate AI features. Matter added an AI-powered co-reader in March 2025, while Recall uses AI to summarise and categorise content automatically.
