Staffordshire Police are continuing inquiries following the unexplained death of a three-month-old girl in a woodland area. Emergency services were called to land off Strawberry Lane, near Cheslyn Hay, at 08:45 BST on Saturday, after a report of a child in cardiac arrest.
An air ambulance was dispatched, but paramedics pronounced the child dead a short time later, according to Staffordshire Police. Detective Inspector Katie Gregory stated that the investigation is at an early stage and that the death is being treated as unexplained. She added that it is an isolated incident and the child's family was reportedly camping in the area.
A police cordon remained in place in the woodland on Sunday, with officers conducting inquiries and providing reassurance. Two camping tents have been pitched at the scene, which is described as "hidden away" from the main woodland in the Wyrley and Essington Branch Canal Local Nature Reserve.
District councillor Robert Duncan acknowledged the upsetting nature of the news for the local community in a Facebook post on Saturday. He urged residents to avoid speculation and allow the family and responders privacy.
