Chelsea midfielder Lexi Potter has earned her first senior England call-up for the Women’s World Cup qualifying playoff against Greece. The 20-year-old's inclusion follows strong form for her club, including a starring role in Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal.
However, Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly were not named in Sarina Wiegman’s squad. The Lionesses will also see the return of captain Leah Williamson after injury, alongside uncapped 18-year-old midfielder Erica Meg Parkinson and London City Lionesses winger Freya Godfrey.
The Lionesses are set to face Greece in the first leg on Friday, 9 October, at the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion, Crete. The return leg will be held at Leicester’s King Power Stadium the following Tuesday. England needs to win these matches to advance to December’s second round of the playoffs.
Sarina Wiegman stated, “We are here to win these two games, deliver strong performances, and move one step closer to securing our place at the World Cup.” She added that the team is looking forward to reconnecting and that players will arrive motivated.
