During the trial of Alan Jones, the prosecutor, Georgina Wright, accused the defence team of "intimidating" an alleged victim's former girlfriend. This accusation arose during the cross-examination of the witness, who denied being financially motivated to provide evidence supporting her ex-boyfriend's allegations.
Jones's barrister, Gabrielle Bashir SC, questioned the witness about a $1,200 fine she received two years prior, suggesting a financial motive. However, Judge Glenn Walsh allowed the questioning, stating it did not amount to intimidation and was relevant to the defence's theory that there was a financial motive for the alleged victim and his ex-girlfriend to fabricate evidence.
The witness maintained she had a conversation with the alleged victim, referred to as J, more than 20 years ago, in which he claimed Jones had touched him. She denied that her evidence was fabricated or that she had a financial motive, stating J "wanted to come out and tell his truth."
Jones has pleaded not guilty to 20 charges of indecent assault and two of sexual touching against six complainants. The trial continues before Judge Walsh in Downing Centre court.
