Entertainment industry and AFL figure Ralph Carr has stated he is in a "living hell" and has been "destroyed" after being convicted of rape, a Victorian court heard on Monday.
Carr was found guilty last month of two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault following a trial in the county court of Victoria. He had pleaded not guilty to the offences, which were committed against a former employee in March 2023.
The court heard that Carr told psychiatrist Dr Jacqueline Rakov he had deliberately hit his head while in custody as an act of self-harm and was experiencing three to four panic attacks daily. His lawyer, Dermot Dann KC, presented a report from Dr Rakov detailing that Carr spends 23 hours a day on lockdown in his prison cell.
Mr Dann stated that Carr's career is "destroyed" regardless of any future legal proceedings, as it relied on public relations and connections. Dr Rakov expressed concern that Carr could take his own life if his application for a stay on his sentence is denied, according to Mr Dann.
Carr also reportedly told Dr Rakov he had been recommended for hospital transportation twice due to high blood pressure and was barely sleeping or eating. Dr Rakov is giving evidence on Monday, having previously testified in relation to Carr's application for a suppression order.
