The true story of British-Somali boxer Ramla Ali is depicted in the new film, 'In the Shadows'. The movie, written by Ursula Rani Sarma and directed by Anthony Wonke in his feature-film debut, confidently tells Ali's journey.
Jasmine Jobson, known from TV's 'Top Boy', portrays Ramla Ali. Finn Cole plays her supportive husband Richard, while Gershwyn Eustache Jr. takes on the role of her trainer Clinton. Ali, who escaped the Somali civil war with her family as a refugee to the UK, made history in 2021 as the first person to box for Somalia at the Olympic Games.
The film explores Ali's challenges, including her family's disapproval of her boxing and the need to train in secret. It also touches on the pain she experienced as a child in Somalia, which is indirectly revealed through flashbacks.
