Rangers beat Celtic 3-0 in League Cup as Dan Neil scores twice

Rangers defeated Celtic 3-0 in the Scottish League Cup at Ibrox, with captain Dan Neil scoring twice and Kevin Kelsy also netting. The win sends Rangers into the semi-finals.

  • Dan Neil scored in the 22nd and 75th minutes, with Kevin Kelsy adding a second in the 59th minute.
  • It was Derek McInnes's first Old Firm victory as Rangers boss and Celtic's first domestic defeat of the season.
  • No away fans were present at Ibrox amid a ticket allocation dispute between the two clubs.

Rangers secured an emphatic 3-0 Scottish League Cup win over Celtic at Ibrox, with captain Dan Neil scoring twice and Kevin Kelsy also on target. The victory was Derek McInnes's first Old Firm win as Rangers boss and sent the hosts into the semi-finals.

With no away fans inside Ibrox amid a ticket allocation spat between the two Glasgow clubs, the stadium erupted in the 22nd minute when Neil, signed from Sunderland in the summer, guided in his first Rangers goal from the edge of the box. New striker Kelsy fired in a second in the 59th minute, his first in Light Blue, before Neil added a third with another fine finish in the 75th minute.

It was a first domestic defeat of the season for Celtic, who rarely threatened the Rangers goal. Both sides showed changes for the first derby of the season, with Kim Min-su starting for Rangers and Cameron Carter-Vickers, Kieran Tierney, Benjamin Nygren and Camilo Duran returning for the visitors.

Celtic's Martin O'Neill will not have long to wait for revenge as the two sides meet in the Scottish Premiership next Sunday. Visiting fans are again banned, although after five wins in a row for Rangers, they will travel with confidence.

Why this matters: The result gives Rangers an early Old Firm marker and a place in the League Cup semi-finals, while handing Celtic their first domestic defeat of the season.
