Ray Winstone, known for his roles in productions such as 'The Gentlemen', has spoken to NME about his experience playing a punk band member in the 1982 cult movie 'Ladies And Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains'. The film, which also starred Diane Lane and Laura Dern, depicted a band of teenage girls navigating the punk scene.
In what was his first American film role, Winstone portrayed the lead singer of the fictional band The Looters. He was joined by Paul Simonon from The Clash, and Steve Jones and Paul Cook from The Sex Pistols. Winstone recalled his initial apprehension about the role, stating he told his wife, "I'm not a rock star. I can't do it." His wife's response, "No, you're not. You're an actor," helped him to understand the role.
Winstone also shared memories of living as a frontman during filming in Vancouver, where he noted punk was still emerging. He mentioned having a following and performing gigs. His singing from the film was later featured on a compilation album for The Professionals, a band formed by Cook and Jones.
