Gary Calder has responded to a Guardian Money article detailing how a reader engaged with bank-card scammers. Calder suggested methods to enhance the realism of made-up bank card details when stringing fraudsters along.
These methods include selecting a known issuer identification number (the first six to eight digits) and ensuring the final digit adheres to the Luhn algorithm, a check digit used to detect entry errors. Calder also proposed using notable postcodes, such as SW1A 2AA (10 and 11 Downing Street) or SL4 1NJ (Windsor Castle), to add further authenticity to the fabricated information.
