James Reed, chairman and CEO of Reed, has shared his top three pieces of advice for Prime Minister Andy Burnham as he settles into Number 10. With over 30 years in recruitment, Reed highlighted the unique scrutiny associated with the Prime Ministerial role.
His first recommendation for Mr Burnham is to 'study the fish', meaning to take time to understand the situation before making quick decisions. Reed noted that the current parliamentary recess offers an advantage, allowing the Prime Minister to travel and listen to people without immediate pressure for a full legislative programme or Prime Minister's Questions.
Secondly, Reed advised Mr Burnham to focus on tasks only he can accomplish, rather than everything he could do. He cited the decision to open Number 10 North in Manchester as an example of a distinctive action that could support a broader devolution agenda. Finally, Reed emphasised that the initial three months in a significant new role are often the most challenging, requiring time to build a team and learn the ropes.
Reed commented that early signs from Mr Burnham's first ten days are positive, giving him a 'ten out of ten' against his criteria. He mentioned the Prime Minister's positive public presence and the recent rates cut for pubs as indicators of a new direction.
