Ron Perlman has disclosed that he spat in Sean Connery's face 16 times during the filming of the 1986 movie 'The Name Of The Rose'. Perlman, who played Salvatore, confronted Connery's character, friar William Of Baskerville, in a scene where Salvatore spits in William's face.
Perlman initially found it difficult to perform the action on his "hero" Connery. However, Connery reportedly encouraged him, stating that if Perlman did not spit, they would be on set all day. Perlman explained that the action had to be repeated for various camera angles, including profile, medium shot, close-up, and over-the-shoulder perspectives.
In a 2014 interview with the BBC, Perlman recalled Connery telling him, "Ron, if you don’t spit in my eye, I’ve got nothing to play." Perlman described Connery as "one of the greatest men I’ve ever been in the presence of."
