Masai Russell of the USA and Alison Dos Santos of Brazil each established new world records during a Thursday night of athletics in Zurich. The event, held at the Letzigrund Stadium, saw a sell-out crowd of 25,000 and favourable weather conditions.
Dos Santos was the first to achieve a record, completing the 400m hurdles in 45.80 seconds. This time surpassed the previous record of 45.94 seconds set by Norway's Karsten Warholm. Following this, US Olympic champion Russell set a new benchmark in the 100m hurdles, finishing in 12.09 seconds, beating the prior record of 12.12 seconds held by Nigeria's Tobi Amusan.
In the pole vault, double Olympic and triple world champion Mondo Duplantis secured a victory by clearing 6.25m. His Greek rival Emmanouil Karalis achieved a personal best of 6.20m. Both Dos Santos and Russell will receive $80,000 for their record-breaking performances.
Switzerland's Audrey Werro recorded the third fastest time ever in the women's 800m, clocking 1:53.70. Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi won the men's 800m with a world-leading time of 1:41.76.
