The San Francisco Ballet, described as the US's oldest professional ballet company, is presenting 'Mere Mortals' at the Edinburgh Playhouse as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. The production is a fusion of dance, music, and digital artistry.
Artistic director Tamara Rojo commissioned choreographer Aszure Barton, composer Sam Shepherd (also known as electronic producer Floating Points), and multidisciplinary artists Hamill Industries for the show. Their creative starting point was the myth of Pandora's box, reinterpreted through the lens of current AI technology.
Hamill Industries contributed digital visuals, including morphing pixels displayed on a large screen above the stage. The score, performed live by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, combines electronic and orchestral elements.
