Day one of the athletics at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow saw new Scottish heroes emerge as Ben Sandilands and Steven Bryce claimed gold and bronze respectively in the men's T20 1500m. Sandilands delivered a rapid final lap, clocking 3:57.20, while Bryce secured third place just behind Canada's Michael Barber.
The day had initially been anticipated as a potential triumphant return for Eilish McColgan in the women's 10,000m. However, McColgan was forced to withdraw from the event after failing to recover from a foot injury, leaving Megan Keith as the sole Scottish representative, who finished ninth.
Elsewhere, Canada's Ethan Katzberg set a new Commonwealth record in the hammer throw with a throw of 80.97m. Scotland's Chris Bennett concluded his 24-year career, finishing fifth in the hammer with a throw of 69.48m.
Jemma Reekie and Erin Wallace both comfortably advanced to the semi-finals of the 800m. Stephen Mackenzie progressed to the men's long jump final, and Angela McAuslan-Kelly secured her spot in the women's hammer final.
