Scottish exam pass rates rise across all levels

Scottish students have received their exam results, with pass rates increasing for National 5, Highers, and Advanced Highers. A record number of vocational and technical qualifications were also awarded.

  • National 5 pass rate rose by 0.8% to 79.2% this year.
  • Higher pass rate increased by 0.8% to 76.7%.
  • Advanced Higher pass rate went up by 0.9% to 77.6%.

Pass rates for Scottish exams have increased across the country as over 148,000 learners received their results for Nationals, Highers, Advanced Highers, and Skills for Work Awards.

Qualifications Scotland, the new exams body, reported a record 120,485 vocational and technical qualifications were awarded at levels 1-6, marking a 9.1% increase from 2025. The poverty-related attainment gap has also narrowed compared to last year and 2019, though it remains significant.

Education Secretary Màiri McAllan described it as a "proud day" for young people and the education system, highlighting the positive results and record vocational qualifications. Ucas also noted a record number of Scottish students accepted into university or college.

The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) praised the hard work of learners and teachers, but expressed concern about the persistence of the attainment gap. Opposition politicians called for further action to improve outcomes and address issues such as teacher numbers and the attainment gap.
