Several people have been injured after a car crashed into a crowd in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday morning. Fans had gathered to farewell the Knights team bus ahead of the NRL grand final.
New South Wales police reported that emergency services were called to the Transfield Drive roundabout on Newcastle Link Road in Wallsend at approximately 9:30am, following reports of a vehicle striking multiple individuals.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene. Police confirmed that those injured are currently receiving treatment.
The incident resulted in the closure of Newcastle Link Road in both directions and the diversion of the Knights' grand final procession. The club confirmed the route change via Instagram, citing public safety as their priority and apologising to fans.
NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed his thoughts for the injured and their families, noting the community's unity during the grand final period.
