Shoreham air crash 11th anniversary service held in town

A service is being held in Shoreham today to mark 11 years since the air crash that killed 11 men.

  • Eleven men died on 22 August 2015 when a vintage Hawker Hunter jet crashed onto the A27.
  • The service will include the reading of the names of the 11 men who died.
  • The pilot, Andrew Hill, was blamed for the deaths at an inquest but cleared of manslaughter.

A service is taking place in Shoreham this afternoon to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the air crash that occurred on 22 August 2015. Eleven men were killed when pilot Andrew Hill crashed a vintage Hawker Hunter jet onto the A27 while attempting a mid-air stunt.

The service, described as more "low key" than previous commemorations, is being held not only to honour those who died but also for the many others affected by the traumatic events, according to Rev Pat Alden. Sixteen people were injured in the incident.

During the service, the names of the 11 men who died will be read out on the Old Shoreham Toll Bridge at 13:22 BST, the exact time of the crash 11 years ago. Mr Hill was cleared of manslaughter but an inquest blamed him for the deaths; his final legal challenge to reinstate his licence was rejected last year.
