Two sisters have described their astonishment and joy after welcoming their new babies just hours apart in the same hospital ward. Jessica, 28, and her younger sister Abi, 26, both gave birth to sons on May 20th, a coincidence they labelled as 'surreal'.
Abi's son, Freddie, arrived first at 10:44 BST, followed by Jessica's son, Alfie, at 16:59 BST. The unexpected turn of events saw the sisters, who were both at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Devon, placed in adjacent beds on the same ward by their midwife. This close proximity allowed them to share the immediate post-birth experience, which they playfully compared to a 'sleepover'.
The sisters had joked throughout their pregnancies about the possibility of giving birth on the same day, despite their due dates being several days apart – Abi's on May 23rd and Jessica's on May 26th. Both babies arrived earlier than anticipated, turning their jest into a remarkable reality. Abi, who was being induced, recalled her surprise at encountering her sister, who had just gone into labour, in the hospital corridor.
For both women, these are not their first children. Abi and her husband Jamie already have a three-year-old daughter, Millie, while Jessica and her husband Lewis are parents to two-year-old Charlie. Abi, a nurse practitioner, and Jessica, a dispensing optician, found immense comfort in sharing the often-isolating experience of pregnancy, exchanging 'stupid questions' and commiserating about the difficulties.
The unique bond formed by their sons, Freddie and Alfie, who are now three weeks old, is set to continue. Their mothers are already planning to hold joint birthday parties for them as they grow, envisioning them as being 'like siblings really'. The shared experience has undoubtedly created an unforgettable start to their sons' lives and strengthened the sisters' own connection.
