Snap has unveiled a range of new features and services for its Specs smart glasses at an event in Los Angeles, as the company seeks to make the case for the $2,200 device.
Among the announcements was Specs Intelligence, which Snap calls a new anticipatory AI system designed to pair not only with its glasses but with user devices including iPhones and Macs. Snap claims the system builds an understanding of a user's goals, priorities, relationships and routines from connected apps and tools. Chief executive Evan Spiegel described it as an AI native operating system with intelligence designed around your projects.
The company also announced Specs for Enterprise, a programme allowing the device to be integrated into corporate workflows, with partnerships including Amazon, Salesforce and Nvidia. A demo video appeared to show an IT technician repairing hardware with the help of the glasses. Spiegel said the company is building out mobile device management, security controls, and ways to deploy and manage stacks across teams.
New entertainment options allow Specs to connect with HBO Max and Spotify. An app developed with the NBA and WNBA lets users practise basketball and improve their shot via the glasses' AR capabilities.
A connectivity package sold separately includes a charging case with built-in cellular connectivity, made available via a partnership with Verizon, costing $10 a month for Verizon customers and $20 a month for non-Verizon customers.
Spiegel framed Specs as a new way to engage with computing in a more human-centric format. Snap has announced it is hosting a Specs pop-up in Los Angeles in October before the devices ship later this autumn.
