Socceroos unchanged for Brazil friendly, Brazil make seven changes

Australia's Socceroos maintain the same line-up for their second friendly against Brazil, while Brazil's Seleção have made seven changes from their previous match.

  • Australia's Socceroos have named an unchanged line-up for their friendly against Brazil in Brisbane.
  • Brazil has made seven changes to their starting XI from the Townsville draw.
  • The match is being played at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

The Socceroos are set to face Brazil in Brisbane today, with head coach Tony Popovic opting for an unchanged line-up from their previous friendly in Townsville. Popovic stated he wants to see if Nestor Irankunda can replicate his earlier impact and aims for the team to develop and challenge Brazil once more.

Brazil, however, has made significant adjustments, with seven changes to their squad from the Townsville draw. Midfielders Guimaraes and Danilo, along with attackers Raphinha and Vinicius, are the only players remaining from the opening game.

The pitch conditions at Lang Park in Brisbane are hoped to be improved after issues in Townsville, where the local council reportedly had 20 days to prepare the pitch, yet it was visibly patchy. Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti was openly critical of the Townsville surface, stating it was "difficult to play on a pitch like this."

This international window holds particular importance for Australia as they prepare for the 2027 Asian Cup, which is scheduled to kick off in Saudi Arabia in January.

Why this matters: This series of friendlies is crucial for Australia's preparations for the 2027 Asian Cup, allowing the team to develop and integrate new players.
