Somerset Prepared is set to celebrate the role of young people in community resilience at its annual event on Wednesday 21 October. The Community Resilience Day, taking place at Millfield School in Street, will explore how younger generations can contribute fresh ideas to emergency planning.
The free event will feature youth-themed sessions, including the Hampshire Young People’s Emergency Response scheme and discussions on engaging schools with local flood action groups. Martin Parham, a lecturer in disaster management, will deliver a keynote address on involving young people in resilience planning.
Workshops at the event will cover creating emergency plans, preparing for wildfires, and understanding weather patterns such as El Niño. There will also be a demonstration of three days' worth of food and water for a household, and an update on the Somerset Flood Resilience Fund.
The event is organised by the Somerset Prepared Partnership and funded by Somerset Rivers Authority. It aims to provide practical tools and learning opportunities for communities to plan ahead for emergencies.
Separately, the Environment Agency's Flood Action Week is scheduled from Monday 12 October to 18 October 2026. This initiative aims to raise awareness of flood risk and encourage people to take actions to protect themselves and their property.
