The classic 1977 film, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, is set to be dubbed into Welsh for the first time. This project, announced by S4C and Creative Wales in partnership with Lucasfilm and Disney at the National Eisteddfod, will celebrate the film's 50th anniversary next year.

The Welsh language version, titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, will be broadcast on S4C and its platforms starting from Christmas Day. Actor Matthew Rhys will lend his voice to Han Solo, while Rhys Ifans will portray Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Aimee-Ffion Edwards will voice Princess Leia.

Mark Lewis Jones, who previously appeared in Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, will take on the role of Darth Vader, with Osian Morgan voicing Luke Skywalker. Lucasfilm co-president Lynwen Brennan, who is Welsh, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Welsh talent to make this translation a reality.

Why this matters: This project aims to preserve and revitalise interest in the Welsh language by making an iconic film accessible to Welsh speakers in their native tongue.

What this means for you: If you are a Welsh speaker, you will be able to watch Star Wars: A New Hope in your native language from Christmas Day.
