Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has emerged as the frontrunner to take over as England's next Test coach. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) began interviewing candidates last week to find a replacement for Brendon McCullum, who departed after a period of poor form and a 4-1 loss in the winter Ashes.
Fleming, 53, appears set for the appointment after a round of interviews. Other potential candidates, Andy Flower and Justin Langer, have reportedly ruled themselves out or not been contacted by the ECB.
Fleming recently left his position with Chennai Super Kings earlier this summer, where he secured five Indian Premier League triumphs. He has also coached Southern Brave in The Hundred. One of his initial responsibilities would be to name a new England red-ball captain, following Ben Stokes' retirement from international cricket last month.
The England Test team is currently ranked fifth in the world and has not achieved a series victory in 14 months, experiencing eight defeats across their last 13 matches.
