Linnea Berthelsen, recognised for her role as Kali in the Netflix series Stranger Things, has made her UK stage debut in the dramatic monologue Darkling. The production, currently at London's Bush Theatre, features Berthelsen in a singular, physical performance.
Titas Halder's play is set against the backdrop of the 1984 toxic gas leak in Bhopal, India, an environmental catastrophe that resulted in thousands of deaths. Berthelsen's character recounts her early years, with the silhouette of a new factory foreshadowing the disaster.
The production, directed by Matthew Xia, uses a monologue format to convey the story. Simon Kenny designed the soil-filled set, and Rajiv Pattani was the lighting designer.
