Sunderland have announced the departure of interim chief executive Tom Burwell, just five months after he took on the role. Majority owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, 29, will now take charge of the club's day-to-day operations, assuming the role of Executive Chairman.
Burwell's exit comes ahead of a planned appearance at a sports business conference in London. Sunderland, who are playing in the Europa League this year and returned to the English top flight last year, has been without a front-of-shirt sponsor since the start of the season due to a Premier League ban on gambling advertising. The club also lacks a training kit sponsor, potentially impacting revenue, though European football participation could help offset this.
A club statement confirmed Burwell's departure with immediate effect, thanking him for his contribution and wishing him well. Burwell remains a director at BIA Sports Group, a holding firm established by Louis-Dreyfus.
