WSL takes break after five weeks; London City and Man City impress

The Women's Super League is taking a two-week break after five weeks of play, with London City Lionesses and Manchester City showing strong starts to the season.

  • London City Lionesses secured a 6-1 win against Tottenham, with two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas scoring twice.
  • Defending champions Manchester City have won all five of their opening games, scoring 16 goals.
  • Manchester United have achieved four consecutive victories across all competitions.

The Women's Super League is currently on a two-week break following the initial five weeks of the season. London City Lionesses have demonstrated a strong start, notably with a 6-1 victory over Tottenham. Manager Eder Maestre highlighted the talent and depth of his squad, which includes summer signings such as two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, who scored twice in the match.

Defending champions Manchester City have maintained their strong form, winning all five of their opening games and scoring 16 goals. Their recent comeback win against Arsenal marks their best start to a season since the 2017-18 campaign. Chelsea, their closest rivals, have responded to an opening-day draw with four consecutive wins without conceding a goal.

Manchester United, under new manager Eva Olid, have found their rhythm after an initial period of transition. They have secured four straight victories across all competitions, including a 1-0 win against Liverpool. Summer signing Andrea Medina has been a positive influence on the left wing.

Among the promoted clubs, Crystal Palace appear to be the most comfortable, having accumulated six points from five games. However, Birmingham and Charlton are currently at the bottom of the table. Birmingham has two points, while Charlton has zero points, having conceded 15 goals and scored only two.

Early indications suggest a potential trend of falling attendances at some major matches compared to previous seasons, though official figures for all games are yet to be released. For example, the Chelsea v Arsenal game on 27 September saw 36% fewer attendees than a similar fixture in January.
