Surrey secured a dramatic one-wicket victory against Yorkshire in the Rothesay County Championship Division One at the Kia Oval. The win, achieved on day three, significantly boosts Surrey's prospects of remaining in the top division.
Josh Blake, with an unbeaten 43 runs from 183 balls, and Matt Fisher, who contributed 33 runs and took 6-25, were key figures for Surrey. Blake, a 27-year-old reserve wicketkeeper playing as a makeshift top-order batsman, spent four and a half hours at the crease.
Coming together with Surrey at 115-7, chasing 185, Blake and Fisher added 55 runs for the eighth wicket. After Fisher's dismissal, Auqib Nabi hit a six but was out the next ball, leaving two runs needed. Dan Worrall then hit the winning boundary, taking Surrey to 187-9.
The 19-point victory lifts Surrey above Yorkshire in the Division One standings. The result means Yorkshire are now drawn further into the relegation battle, while a loss for Surrey would have placed them in significant trouble.
