Sussex County Cricket Club is proposing a new T10 tournament for counties that do not host matches in The Hundred. The proposed competition would run during August, alongside the One-Day Cup, aiming to provide more competitive action and generate revenue for smaller counties.
Ed Warner, the new Sussex chair, suggested a 'kid-friendly' triangular competition, citing Kent and Essex as potential participants. Warner stated that such events would not directly compete with The Hundred but would offer money-generating opportunities and playing chances for cricketers not featuring in the main tournament.
The proposal comes amidst widespread frustration among smaller counties regarding limited home cricket during the summer. Sussex, for example, has only four days of home play during this year's Hundred, which began on 21 July and concludes on 16 August.
Sussex was recently placed in special measures by the ECB for breaching financial sustainability regulations and received a 12-point deduction in this season's County Championship. Warner, appointed last month, is working to address these financial failings, including introducing efficiency savings and cutting the player budget.
