In last Sunday's Swedish election, voters reportedly delivered a narrow victory to the Social Democratic leader, Magdalena Andersson, and the progressive bloc of parties. This outcome appears to have rejected the prospect of the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) becoming ministers in the next government.
Prior to the poll, the outgoing Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, had stated his intention to invite members of the SD into government if his right-wing alliance secured the largest number of seats. The SD's share of the vote reportedly fell for the first time since the late 1980s, and the party slipped from second to third place, behind the conservative Moderates.
Magdalena Andersson's party recorded its lowest vote share for over a century, as it reportedly leaked support on the left. This occurred despite her offering a milder approach to immigration and asylum compared to the previous administration.
