The Government of Syria has joined the Global Coalition against Da'esh, becoming its 90th member. The United Kingdom welcomed this decision, stating that a new political chapter in Syria presents an opportunity for greater stability and security.
The UK also commended Syria and Iraq for their efforts against Da'esh. In Iraq, the UK continues to work with the government on challenges posed by approximately 6,000 Da'esh detainees.
Challenges remain as Da'esh and its affiliates seek to regroup and expand, particularly in West Africa and the Sahel. Recent coordinated attacks in Niger and Mali demonstrate the increasing sophistication and operational reach of terrorist groups in the Sahel, leading to displacement and increased humanitarian need.
To address these challenges, the UK is strengthening counter-terrorism capabilities in West Africa and the Sahel. This includes targeted support for intelligence sharing, investigations, and counter-terrorism finance activity, as well as supporting regional initiatives like Nigeria’s National Counter-Terrorism Centre and Côte d’Ivoire’s Counter-Terrorism Academy.
The UK also noted that ISIL-Khorasan continues to pose a significant threat and commended Pakistan's role in combating the group. The Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy has been renewed, marking its twentieth year, with the UK emphasising that counter-terrorism succeeds when rooted in human rights, the rule of law, and international cooperation.
