Teenage gymnasts win European medals for Team GB

Two teenage gymnasts from Huntingdon Gymnastics Club, Uzair Chowdhury and Sol Scott, have secured medals at the Junior European Championships in Croatia.

  • Uzair Chowdhury, 16, successfully defended his parallel bars and team titles at the Junior European Championships.
  • Sol Scott, 19, helped Team GB win gold in the senior competition and secured a bronze in the individual vault final.
  • Both gymnasts train at Huntingdon Gymnastics Club and hope to compete in the Olympics in 2028 and 2032.

Uzair Chowdhury, 16, from Luton, successfully defended his parallel bars and team titles at the Junior European Championships in Croatia last month. Mr Chowdhury, who trains at Huntingdon Gymnastics Club, said he was proud to be competing on the world stage.

His clubmate, 19-year-old Sol Scott from Godmanchester, also returned from Zagreb with medals. Mr Scott competed in the senior competition, contributing to Team GB's gold medal win and securing a bronze in the individual vault final.

Both gymnasts expressed their hope to be part of Team GB's Olympic squads in 2028 and 2032. Their coach, Ben Howells, praised their dedication and hard work, noting the challenges of training for gymnastics.

Mr Chowdhury, who started gymnastics a decade ago, travels three hours by train, six days a week, for training. He said he wants to show the younger generation that it is possible for people from the Asian community to succeed in sport at a high level.

Mr Scott highlighted the significant support from his family and the sacrifices made to achieve his goals. He also mentioned experiencing a disparity in scholarship opportunities for men in gymnastics in the US.
