  • Absi's family will work with authorities on the review and to share information.

Lake District authorities have pledged to work with the family of a teenager who drowned in a tarn to review water safety measures. Absi Ahmed Mohammad, 17, died at High Dam near Windermere on 7 April after experiencing cold water shock while swimming with friends.

Following an inquest, the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) stated it would review issues such as signage and the placement of life-saving equipment at the end of the summer season. Absi's family wanted to be involved in this review, and ranger team leader Steven Tatlock confirmed their participation.

The inquest heard Absi, from Poulton-le-Fylde, was not a strong swimmer and got into difficulty in the 11C water while attempting to reach an island 150m from shore. The coroner, Kirsty Gomersal, urged people to follow safety guidance for open water swimming, including using buoyancy aids and researching unknown areas.

Mr Tatlock said the possible addition of a second throw-line nearer to where the boys were swimming would be considered as part of the review. He also stated that Absi's death was the first incident known at the tarn by both the LDNPA and Cumbria Police.
