Recovery work is underway to remove carriages from a train that derailed near Lewes, with 150 people on board. The Southern 14:24 BST service from London Victoria to Eastbourne derailed last Thursday, resulting in 30 injuries, two of which were serious.

A preliminary report from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) indicated a defect in the track at the site of the derailment. Network Rail and Greater Thameslink Railway (GTR), which operates Southern, have stated they will consider and implement recommendations from the ongoing investigation.

Investigators are continuing to examine how the track was inspected and maintained, the condition of the embankment, and whether hot weather may have been a factor. Lewes MP James MacCleary described the preliminary findings as "deeply concerning," noting that the stretch of track was "kind of well-known locally how bumpy that stretch of track is."
