Tennis players use AI for scouting opponents and personal tasks

Some professional tennis players are utilising generative AI tools like ChatGPT for scouting opponents and managing personal tasks, though opinions on its usefulness and impact vary.

  • Emma Raducanu uses ChatGPT for personal insights, including a 'Chat Wrapped' personality rundown.
  • Bianca Andreescu has used ChatGPT to scout unfamiliar opponents on the lower-level ITF circuit.
  • Some players, including Zizou Bergs and Daniil Medvedev, express scepticism or dislike for AI's current capabilities or broader societal impact.

Professional tennis players are increasingly engaging with generative AI platforms, such as ChatGPT, for a range of uses from opponent scouting to personal organisation. Emma Raducanu reportedly uses ChatGPT extensively for various queries, including generating a 'Chat Wrapped' personality analysis, which she found "a little bit too accurate."

The use of AI for scouting opponents is also emerging. Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, used ChatGPT to research an unfamiliar opponent on the ITF circuit when limited video footage was available. Jessica Pegula also noted that someone on the tour is reportedly using ChatGPT and similar tools to scout future opponents' playing styles.

However, not all players are convinced of AI's utility in tennis. Zizou Bergs described an AI scouting result from a few years ago as "completely trash." Daniil Medvedev and Coco Gauff have also used AI in a more light-hearted capacity, with Medvedev joking with his team about beating top players and Gauff asking for strategies to play herself, which she found uninformative.

Beyond the court, players use AI for diverse personal tasks. Iga Swiatek uses AI to write emails, while Elina Svitolina asked ChatGPT for suitable colours. Jelena Ostapenko uses ChatGPT for convenience but expressed concern about it making people lazy, citing a story where AI provided incorrect visa information. Other players, like Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff, have raised environmental concerns regarding AI's water consumption.
